How to complain about a GP (family doctor) service if you have a medical card or GP Visit Card

If you visit your family doctor (General Practitioner, or ‘GP’) and you have a medical card or a GP Visit Card, you are considered a public patient.

Complain directly to the GP

If you are unhappy with the service you received from a GP, you should first of all complain to the GP directly. You can do this in person, in writing or by telephone.

If you are unhappy with the response, or do not wish to approach them directly in the first instance, you can contact the HSE Complaints Officer for the service.

Health Service Executive (HSE)

If you are not happy with the response from the GP, you should next contact the Health Service Executive (HSE). The HSE has a complaints procedure called Your Service Your Say. Complaints can be made over the phone or in writing and you can expect an update on your complaint within thirty days.

If you are unhappy with the recommendations made by the HSE Complaints Officer, you can ask for a review from the HSE’s Director of Advocacy or go straight to the Office of the Ombudsman or Ombudsman for Children.

Office of the Ombudsman / Ombudsman for Children

If you are not happy with the response from the HSE, you can ask the Office of the Ombudsman to examine your complaint and how your complaint was handled.  You can contact the Ombudsman at any time during the complaints process, but you may be asked to follow your complaint with the HSE first if you have not tried all of the HSE processes.

Medical Council

In cases where you feel there has been professional misconduct, you should refer your case to the Medical Council. The Medical Council is the regulator for all doctors working in Ireland, including GPs.

Má tá tú míshásta leis an tseirbhís a fuair tú ó DG, ba chóir duit gearán a dhéanamh go díreach leis an DG ar dtús. Is féidir leat é sin a dhéanamh go pearsanta, i scríbhinn nó ar an teileafón.

Más rud é go bhfuil tú míshásta leis an bhfreagra, nó nach mian leat féin teagmháil a dhéanamh leo ar an gcéad dul síos, is féidir leat teagmháil a dhéanamh leis an Oifigeach Gearán de chuid FSS le haghaidh na seirbhíse.

Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte (FSS)

Más rud é nach bhfuil tú sásta leis an bhfreagra ón DG, ba chóir duit teagmháil a dhéanamh le Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte (FSS) ina dhiaidh sin. Tá nós imeachta ag FSS ar a dtugtar ‘Do Sheirbhís, Do Bharúil’ Is féidir gearáin a dhéanamh ar an teileafón nó i scríbhinn agus féadfaidh tú a bheith ag súil go bhfaighidh tú an scéal is déanaí faoi do ghearán laistigh de thríocha lá.

Más rud é nach bhfuil tú sásta leis na moltaí atá déanta ag an oifigeach gearán, féadfaidh tú iarraidh ar Stiúrthóir Abhcóideachta FSS athbhreithniú a dhéanamh, nó féadfaidh tú féin dul i dteagmháil le hOifig an Ombudsman nó leis an Ombudsman do Leanaí.

Is féidir leat tuilleadh a fháil amach inár leathanach maidir le nósanna imeachta, Do Sheirbhís, Do Bharúil.

Oifig an Ombudsman / Oifig an Ombudsman do Leanaí

Más rud é nach bhfuil tú sásta leis an bhfreagra ó FSS, is féidir leat iarraidh ar Oifig an Ombudsman scrúdú a dhéanamh ar do ghearán agus ar an dóigh a caitheadh le do ghearán. Is féidir leat teagmháil a dhéanamh leis an Ombudsman ag am ar bith le linn phróiseas an ghearáin, ach d’fhéadfadh go n-iarrfaí ort do ghearán a leanúint le FSS ar dtús más rud é nach bhfuil triail bainte agat as gach ceann de phróisis FSS.

Is féidir leat níos mó a fháil amach inár leathanach faoi ghearán a chur ar aghaidh chuig Oifig an Ombudsman.

Má bhaineann an gearán le leanbh, ba chóir duit teagmháil a dhéanamh leis an Ombudsman do Leanaí.

Is féidir leat níos mó a fháil amach inár leathanach faoi ghearán a chur ar aghaidh chuig an Ombudsman do Leanaí.

Comhairle na nDochtúirí Leighis

I gcásanna ina measann tú go raibh mí-iompar gairmiúil ar bun, ba chóir duit do chás a chur faoi bhráid Chomhairle na nDochtúirí Leighis. Is í Comhairle na nDochtúirí Leighis an rialtóir do gach dochtúir atá ag obair in Éirinn, lena n-áirítear DGanna.
